Emergency Care

Orthodontic emergencies are uncommon, but they can occasionally happen during treatment. At Shelly Orthodontics, our goal is to help you manage any issue quickly and comfortably while keeping your treatment on track.

Most orthodontic emergencies fall into two categories: appliance-related issues and direct injuries to the mouth or teeth.

What Should I Do If I Have an Orthodontic Appliance Issue?

If a bracket, wire, or other part of your appliance becomes loose or damaged, there is usually no need to panic. These issues are common and can often be managed temporarily at home until we are able to see you.

Please contact our office during patient hours if you notice:

  • A loose bracket or band
  • A broken wire or a wire that is poking your cheek or gums
  • A tie wire is causing irritation

We are unable to accommodate walk-in emergency visits, so calling ahead allows us to schedule time to properly assist you.

How Can I Manage Discomfort at Home?

While waiting for your appointment, there are simple ways to reduce discomfort and protect your mouth.

You can:

  • Cover an irritating wire with orthodontic wax
  • Gently tuck a wire using a pencil eraser or cotton swab
  • Leave a loose bracket in place and avoid touching it
  • Carefully trim a poking wire, if necessary, using sanitized nail clippers

These temporary solutions can help keep you comfortable until your appliance is repaired.

What Should I Do If I Injure My Teeth or Mouth?

If you experience a direct injury to your mouth or teeth, immediate care is important to prevent further complications.

You should:

  • Apply ice to reduce swelling
  • Contact your general dentist as soon as possible
  • Follow their instructions for treatment

If a tooth is chipped, displaced, or knocked out, your general dentist should be your first point of contact, as they are best equipped to manage these injuries.

After your dental care is completed, we will repair or adjust any orthodontic appliances if needed.

What Should I Do If I Have an Emergency After Hours?

If you experience discomfort or an urgent issue outside of regular office hours, please contact our office. Instructions will be available to guide you on how to reach us or receive further assistance.

When Should I Call the Office?

You should contact our office if you experience:

  • Ongoing pain or irritation
  • A loose or broken appliance
  • A wire that cannot be managed at home
  • Any issue that may affect your treatment progress

Our team is here to support you and ensure your treatment continues as smoothly as possible.
