FAQ

Initial Visit

Do you charge for an initial visit?

No, your initial visit is complimentary. As a courtesy to you and your general dentist, we offer a free orthodontic evaluation. Please note that a small co-pay may apply if X-rays or diagnostic services are needed.

At what age do you start seeing patients?

We follow the American Association of Orthodontists’ recommendation to begin evaluations around age 7.

Why do you evaluate patients so young during an early braces for kids visit?

These early visits are primarily for observation and education, not immediate treatment. We assess growth patterns and identify any potential issues early on. Often, no treatment is necessary at this time, and we monitor the development.

How long will the first visit take, and is the orthodontist consultation included?

Expect your first visit to last 30 to 60 minutes. We may conduct a basic visual exam and take diagnostic records if needed. You’ll meet with Dr. Andrew Shelly to review your case and discuss any next steps.

Do you take patients transferring from out of town?

Yes! We’re happy to welcome transfer patients. You’ll receive a full evaluation, and we’ll create a treatment plan tailored to your needs, without requiring a large upfront fee. A fair monthly payment plan will be arranged.

Do you have any adult braces patients in your practice?

Absolutely. Many adults are now choosing orthodontics thanks to more discreet and convenient options like Invisalign and clear braces.

What is the difference between an orthodontist and a dentist, and who should I see for teeth alignment?

Orthodontists are dental specialists who receive two or more years of advanced training in aligning teeth and correcting jaw misalignment. For treatments like braces or Invisalign, it’s best to consult an orthodontist.

Can I make all my appointments in the afternoon after school and late in the day?

We do our best to work around your schedule. While certain procedures must be done during regular hours (9 a.m. – 3 p.m.), we reserve early morning and late afternoon appointments for quick visits whenever we can.

Do you see patients for emergencies?

Yes. If you’re facing an orthodontic emergency, give us a call. Emergency instructions and contact details are available on our website and voicemail.

Financial and Insurance

Can we make payments for affordable braces and Invisalign over time?

Yes. We offer flexible payment options to fit your budget, regardless of whether you have insurance.

How do you handle insurance, especially when planning for the cost of braces or Invisalign cost?

After confirming your insurance benefits, we bill your provider directly. If your coverage changes or ends, you’re still responsible for the agreed-upon treatment cost.

Do you accept credit card payments?

Yes, we accept major credit cards, including Visa, MasterCard, and Discover.

Do you have a direct debit?

Yes. You can set up automatic payments using direct debit, credit cards, or online payment systems.

Do you charge interest?

No. We provide interest-free financing to make your care more accessible.

Do you give family orthodontist discounts for multiple family members?

Yes. We offer family discounts when multiple members begin treatment with us.

Types of Orthodontic Treatment

What is Phase 1 Treatment and how does it help with early pediatric orthodontist needs?

Phase 1 treatment starts while baby and adult teeth are still present. It addresses significant concerns early, like crossbites or jaw issues, helping prevent more complex problems later. Phase 1 often lays the foundation for Phase 2 treatment.

What is Phase 2 Treatment, and how does it compare to braces vs Invisalign for teens?

Phase 2 begins once all permanent teeth have erupted and lasts approximately 18–24 months. It involves comprehensive alignment using either braces or Invisalign to fine-tune positioning and ensure long-term results.

How do I know two-phase treatment is the right teeth straightening for teenagers?

Each patient is different. Two-phase treatment is recommended only when it benefits your child’s unique situation. A consultation and diagnostic record will help us determine the best approach.

Moving of Teeth (Mechanics)

I need to be pre-medicated for the dentist. Do I need to take my medicine for the orthodontist?

Possibly. Some procedures may require it. Check with your physician or Dr. Shelly prior to your visit.

How long do braces take, and what is the typical orthodontic treatment timeline?

Most patients complete treatment within two years, although individual cases may vary based on complexity.

How do teeth straightening options actually move your teeth into place?

Braces and aligners gradually guide teeth into better alignment using light, controlled forces. Dr. Shelly carefully plans each step to ensure safe, predictable results.

Do you use recycled braces?

No. We use brand-new orthodontic appliances for every patient.

Orthodontic Retainers

Do retainers after braces or Invisalign need to be worn long-term?

Yes. Retainers are worn full-time for the first several months, then at night indefinitely to keep your smile stable.

Why do teeth get crooked after wearing braces or clear aligners?

Without retainers, teeth naturally tend to shift over time. Consistent retainer use helps prevent relapse.

How about retainers glued to the backs of teeth?

Bonded retainers, usually placed behind lower front teeth, can help maintain alignment. They require excellent hygiene and regular dental visits to prevent complications.

Wisdom Teeth (Third Molars)

Do wisdom teeth cause teeth to get crooked?

There is no strong evidence linking wisdom teeth to crowding. Other factors are more likely to cause post-treatment movement.

Why do wisdom teeth need to be removed before or after jaw alignment treatment?

Impacted wisdom teeth can lead to infection or gum issues. Even if they don’t cause crowding, proactive removal is often recommended.

When is a good time to have wisdom teeth removed?

Most oral surgeons advise removal when two-thirds of the root structure has developed, typically between the ages of 16 and 18.

Temporomandibular Disorders (TMJ)

Can braces or orthodontic treatment treat or cause TMJ problems?

There’s no proven link between braces and TMJ disorders. These issues can occur regardless of your bite or orthodontic status.

Health Impact

What are the health benefits of wearing clear braces for adults or teens?

Orthodontics can enhance chewing function, facial symmetry, and oral hygiene. Straight teeth are easier to clean and can lead to better dental and overall health.

How do enlarged adenoids and allergies affect braces?

Chronic mouth breathing from allergies or enlarged adenoids may impact jaw growth and lead to alignment issues such as crowding.

How does a tongue thrust or low tongue posture affect braces?

Poor tongue posture can exert pressure on front teeth, causing spacing or protrusion. Addressing this issue can enhance orthodontic outcomes.
