In some cases, a healthy, beautiful smile requires more than braces alone. Surgical orthodontics, also known as orthognathic surgery, is recommended when jaw irregularities or bite issues cannot be corrected through orthodontic treatment alone. Dr. Andrew Shelly works closely with experienced oral and maxillofacial surgeons to provide life-changing results through this advanced, collaborative approach.
What Is Surgical Orthodontics?
Surgical orthodontics is used to correct jaw misalignments, improve facial balance, and enhance functions like chewing, speaking, and breathing. While braces move the teeth into position, orthognathic surgery repositions the jaw bones so everything fits together properly.
This combined approach not only restores function but also improves facial appearance, offering both medical and cosmetic benefits.
Who Is a Candidate for Jaw Surgery?
Surgical orthodontics is typically recommended for adult patients who:
Have moderate to severe jaw misalignments or bite issues
Experience facial asymmetry, difficulty chewing, or jaw pain
Have completed jaw growth (usually by age 16 for females, 18 for males)
Are not seeing improvements with orthodontic treatment alone
In many cases, braces are started 12–24 months before surgery, as pre-surgical tooth alignment is necessary to ensure optimal surgical outcomes.
How Does the Process Work?
Braces First – Initial orthodontic treatment aligns the teeth in preparation for surgery. This phase may make the bite look worse temporarily, which is expected.
Surgical Phase – An oral and maxillofacial surgeon performs the jaw surgery, which may include moving the upper jaw, lower jaw, or both. Surgery typically takes several hours, depending on the complexity.
Recovery – Initial recovery takes about two weeks, and full healing can take 4 to 8 weeks. Patients can usually return to normal activities after the initial healing period.
Post-Surgical Adjustments – After healing, the orthodontist will make minor adjustments to refine your bite.
Braces Off & Retainer – Braces are removed 6 to 12 months after surgery, followed by the use of a retainer to maintain results.
